General info about San Diego Airport
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is the second largest airport in the world with only one runway in terms of flight movements and is only surpassed by London Gatwick. Up to 465 take-offs and landings are handled here every day, serving up to 18.75 million passengers per year (as of 2014). The airport is located about five kilometers northwest of downtown San Diego and is operated by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. Since 1949 civil flights have been offered from the former so-called «Lindbergh Field»; the first Airline on site was Pacific Southwest.
San Diego International Airport: gateway to the Pacific and the Wild West
Although the California metropolis is the only conurbation in the United States that does not have an air hub, the Airport is an important hub for Southwest Airlines. In addition, the companies United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines mainly serve San Diego airport. They offer non-stop flights to destinations on the American continent as well as to the United Kingdom (London Heathrow with BA), Canada, Mexico, and Japan (Tokyo-Narita with Japan Airlines). Most flights per day go to San Francisco (Delta, American Eagle or United Express) and Los Angeles (Virgin America, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines). The popular flight route Frankfurt-San Diego is best accessed via a stop in London. In San Diego, mainly westerly winds prevail, so that take-offs and landings are flown from the East. Due to the topography of the airport area, a particularly steep angle must be maintained. Due to the proximity to the city area between 23.30 and 6.30 clock a nightly starting ban prevails. Passengers from Europe should consider the time difference when planning their trip and deduct eight hours from Central European time.
San Diego airport is very close to the port and downtown
Drivers arriving from outside the airport can easily reach the airport via the I5, I8, or I15 Interstates or from State Route 163. A drive from downtown to San Diego airport takes ten to fifteen minutes along Harbor Drive. Passengers should note that the «San Diego Trolley and the Coaster Commuter» hold at the airport. However, the Flyer shuttle bus (Route 992) runs between downtown and San Diego airport, serving Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the airport’s separate commuter terminal. This journey takes about ten minutes and offers connections to the Trolley and Coast trains. The buses are wheelchair accessible. At the airport there are several parking lots of different price ranges, some of which are located along Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway and have their own Shuttle Service to the Terminal. A map with the various parking areas, a price overview, and reservation function can be found on the airport’s website. There is also a list of taxi companies represented at the airport. A flight to San Diego should provide unique impressions from the moment of landing, and so the operating company organizes an interesting cultural program with changing exhibitions, performances, and events that bring visitors closer to the culture of the city and the Flair of the West. In addition to this wide range, visitors will find the usual boutiques, kiosks and duty-free shops, as well as a rich selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars. Terminal 2 of San Diego airport also offers guests several lounges and a spa area.
